Hi and welcome to Myke Educate. Today’s tutorial will be on Windows 10 and 11, and I'm going to show you how to take a screenshot using the Snipping Tool. Specifically, I’ll demonstrate how to capture a portion of your screen and show you the keyboard shortcut for the Snipping Tool. Let’s get started!

Windows 10 and 11 Snipping Tool and Shortcuts

On Windows 10 and 11, you'll see my desktop, and I’m going to open up the Start menu. To do that, firstly on your keyboard, press the Windows key. Alternatively, you can click on the Start menu icon at the bottom left corner of your screen. Then, immediately type "snip." Once you do, the Snipping Tool will pop up.

If you plan to use the Snipping Tool frequently, I recommend pinning it to your taskbar. To do this, right-click the Snipping Tool and select "Pin to taskbar." This will place it right on your taskbar for easy access. You can see that I’ve already pinned it down here, so I’ll just click on it to open.

For faster access, you can also use a keyboard shortcut for the Snipping Tool. The shortcut key for the Snipping Tool is Windows + Shift + S. Pressing this snipping tool hotkey will allow you to quickly capture a screenshot without opening the full application.

With the Snipping Tool open (or using the shortcut key for the Snipping Tool), you have several modes to choose from. To capture only a portion of your screen, select "Rectangular Mode." To do this, click on the drop-down arrow next to "Mode" and choose "Rectangular Snip." You can also press Windows + Shift + S, and it will automatically activate the shortcut snipping tool in rectangular mode.

When you do, your screen will turn gray, and you’ll notice a white cursor. Use this cursor to drag over the portion of the screen you want to capture. For example, I’m dragging it over the Windows logo, and now the tool captures an image of just that section.

Next, you can save the screenshot. Click the Save icon, select where you want to save it (e.g., your desktop), name the file (I’ll call it "Windows Logo"), and hit "Save." It will save the screenshot as a PNG file on your desktop.

Now, if I double-click the saved file, it will open as an image. From here, you can email it, include it in a presentation, or use it however you like.

Conclusion

That’s how you take a screenshot on Windows 10 and 11 using the Snipping Tool and the snipping tool hotkey. Whether you're using a desktop, laptop, HP, Dell, or any other brand, this method works as long as you're running Windows 11 and 10. I hope this guide has helped you.
